Abstract

<PICT:0568913/IV/1> The temperature of vapour phase chemical reactions is controlled by maintaining in the reaction chamber 10 a dense suspension of a powdered material which may be catalytic or inert. The reaction chamber is of uniform cross-section, and above it is a zone 17 of greater diameter in which suspended powder is disengaged from the gas and falls back into the reaction chamber. Any powder which is carried out of the zone 17 is separated in a cyclone 20 and returned to the reaction chamber. Additional temperature control may be provided by a heat-exchange conduit 33 surrounding the reaction chamber. The invention is illustrated as applied to the production of phthalic anhydride by oxidation of naphthalene, which is fed from hopper 1 to pipe 3 where it is melted and furnace 4 where it is vaporized. The vapour is mixed with vanadium oxide catalyst and fed into the reaction chamber below distributing grid 11. Oxygen or air is admitted at 16. Other reactions to which the invention is applicable include hydrogenation, oxidation, chlorination, nitration, isomerization, polymerization, cracking, desulphurization, and the synthesis of methanol, phosgene and ammonia.
