568,883. Roasting chromite ores; alkali chromates. UDY, M. J. March 3, 1942, No. 2818. Convention date, July 5, 1941. [Class 1 (iii)] In the production of alkali chromates, a charge comprising chromite ore, lime and soda is roasted until not more than 80 per cent of the chromium has been oxidised to chromate, the charge then leached to obtain a chromate solution, and the residue subjected to a concentration treatment to recover undecomposed chromite. Prior to roasting, the ore may be sintered or fused in the lime as described in Specification 540,364. A suitable charge comprises lime amounting to one and one half to twice the weight of the ore, and enough sodium carbonate to form chromate with 70-80 per cent of the ore. Roasting may be effected at 750-1000‹ C. for about three hours, and leaching be effected with sodium carbonate solution to convert any calcium chromate formed to sodium chromate. The chromite concentrate recovered from the residue after leaching may be leached with sulphuric acid to remove iron oxide and be returned to the roasting process.
