Abstract

568,641. Metal spraying. BALLARD, W. E. Aug. 30, 1943, No. 14106. [Class 69 (iii)] In metal spraying in which the metal wire or strip is fed through and fused by an electric field produced by a metal coil receiving an alternating high-frequency electric current, the propellant gas is directed to a point at or in advance of the melting position of the fusible metal and shielding means are provided to protect such fusible metal from the cooling effect of such gas until the fusible metal reaches the melting position. As shown, the inducting helix 4 connected in an alternating highfrequency circuit by terminals 6 is arranged in a cylindrical insulating casing 1 of porcelain &c. with end walls 2, 3, and has its coils more closely spaced at the part surrounding the melting position of the wire. The end walls 2, 3 support a sleeve of similar non-conducting material 10 which guides the fusible wire 17 and shield it from the cooling effect of the inert propellant gas which flows under pressure in the conduit 22 into the annular channel 13 and thence through orifices 14 to impinge in convergent streams on the molten metal thrown forward by the magnetic pinch resulting from the very high frequencies used and forces it through the nozzle 8, 9 as a spray. Specification 483,517 is referred to.
