[Class 40 (i)] The position of apparatus, such as an electric meter or water-level indicator, having 2<n> possible positions is transmitted to a remote indicator by a succession of n signals, of which the first identifies the half of the scale in which the pointer stands, the second identifies the quarter, and so on. The meter VL is of the type disclosed in Specification 433,569, [Group XXXVII], and the operation of a clutch magnet CL brings the pointer P into connection with one of 32 contacts, whereupon a rotary switch SM takes up a corresponding position. This switch has 5 wipers of which the contacts are connected in multiple to five pairs of wires IT 1-5, IC 1-5 for the transmission of the signals, which are sent in succession to the distant station, for example, in the manner described in Specification 409,472. The indicating switch MR is of the kind disclosed in Specification 432,606, [Group XXXVII], which rotates in either direction under control of magnets MRA, MRB. The signals are received over five pairs of wires OR 1-5, CR 1-5 and each operates relay LX or UX, while relays HA-HE are operative in succession to connect up the 5 wipers of the switch MR, the contacts of which are multipled together like those of the wipers of SM. Thus the switch moves, if necessary, to the apporpriate half of its bank, then to the appropriate quarter, and so on, a return signal being sent after each setting to initiate the next signal.
