Abstract

567,615. Gauges. KAPELLA, Ltd., REASON, R. E., and SCHLESINGER, G. May 3, 1943, No. 6958. [Class 106 (ii)] An apparatus for measuring the roughness of cylindrical surfaces comprises a pick-up unit, a supporting frame for the unit having widely spaced elements to rest on the surface and means for clamping the frame to the surface. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the frame consists of two side members A connected by a cross member B<1> and having projecting lugs D<1> through which pass screw-threaded pins D normal to the surface of the cylindrical shaft or other member C to be measured. The ends of the pins D and a screw-threaded pin B passing through the cross member B<1> rest on the surface of the shaft C. A flexible band E passes round the shaft C from a hook E<1> on one of the side members A to an adjustable bolt E<3> in a lug E<4> on the other side member and serves as a clamp to secure the frame to the shaft C. The pick-up unit is similar to that described in Specification 539,273, and is supported between the side members A with its movable arm F<1> carrying the pick-up head G and stylus G<1> extending in a direction parallel to the generators of the cylindrical shaft C. In a modified form, Fig. 6, the pick-up unit is removably mounted between a clamping plate H and packing plate H<2>, the clamping plate being pressed against the unit casing F by a screw H<1> passing through one of the side members A.
