Abstract
Ethylchloride is prepared by reacting gaseous hydrogenchloride, in the absence of ethylene, with ethylsulphuric ester at 40 to 110 DEG C. in the presence of a compound of antimony, tin or bismuth. Suitable compounds are the chlorides, sulphates, carbonates or oxides. In examples, dry hydrogen chloride is passed into a mixture of (a) ethylsulphuric acid and antimony chloride, (b) p diethylsulphate, sulphuric acid and bismuth oxide, and (c) diethylsulphate, sulphuric acid and tin tetrachloride, and the ethylchloride condensed from the vapours produced. The acid liquid obtained after removal of ethylchloride may be treated with ethylene to give further ethylsulphuric ester, and in other examples a continuous process is used in which ethylene and hydrogen chloride are passed alternately into a vessel originally charged with sulphuric acid and anhydrous bismuth or antimony chloride. When gases containing ethylene are employed, pressure may be used in the production of the ethylsulphuric ester. Specifications 221,512, [Class 2 (iii)], and 370,211 are referred to.
