Abstract
563,970. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metal. STERN, M. March 8, 1943, No. 3751. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Tubes, rods, strips, wire, and T, U, I, and other profile bars, &c. are manufactured from finely divided magnesium or magnesium alloy or from scrap such as borings, turnings, filings and other chips, by passing the metal through a compressing device, such as an extrusion press, at a temperature of from 250 to 800‹ C. at a pressure of at least 3 tons per square inch. The preferred temperature range is 300 to 350. The scrap may be cleaned by heating to from 150 to 180‹ C. and preliminarily compressed at from 1-3 tons per square inch, either in a separate die or press or in the press used for the final extrusion. Oil may be removed by a centrifuge and drying and iron by a magnet.
