Abstract
563,834. Photographic imbibition printing. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION. May 11, 1943, No. 7492. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] Before printing a monochrome or multicolour still or kinematograph picture by imbibition from relief or flat, differentially-hardened matrices on a dye-absorptive blank, the blank is differentially hardened in inverse ratio to the density of the colouring to be printed in the picture area in order to restrict lateral diffusion of the subsequently printed dye. The blank may be a gelatino-silver halide emulsion layer which is first photographically printed from a black and white record, or one of a set of colour component records, of the picture, is then developed with a hardening developer followed by a non-hardening bleach, or with a non- hardening developer followed by a hardening bleach, and'is finally fixed before printing from the imbibition matrix or matrices. If, in the case of a multicolour picture, a grey key print also is desired, after the bleaching step and before fixing, the residual halide in the layer is exposed to light and developed to a silver positive. In addition to the differential hardening of the blank, it may be uniformly hardened, e.g. as described in Specification 484,411. In one example of the production of a multicolour picture without a grey key, the colour component record selected for the differential hardening step is a red aspect positive ; in another, produced with a grey key, the component selected is a green aspect positive. Any staining of the blank resulting from the treatments prior to imbibition printing may be removed by bleaching as with acid permanganate followed by bisulphite.
