Abstract
A water-soluble polymerisation and condensation product, of intrinsic viscosity at least 0.5, formed by reaction between a dibasic carboxylic acid and a diamine containing at least two oxygen atoms in the chain separating the amino groups, is incorporated in an aqueous alkaline cellulosic spinning solution and the solution is formed into artificial fibres, yarns, films, and other structures. The presence of the polyamide renders the regenerated cellulose products more receptive for wool dyes, particularly those capable of dyeing from neutral baths, and the dyeings are resistant to sunlight. The polymer may be a simple polyamide or it may be obtained by interpolymerization of a polyamide-forming composition containing in addition to the reactants specified above, other linear polymer-forming reactants such as monoaminomonocarboxylic acids or mixtures of dibasic carboxylic acids with diamines other than those of the kind specified above. The cellulosic solution may be viscose, cuprammoniumcellulose solution, or a solution of cellulose in a quaternary ammonium base. The polymer may be present to the extent of 5-20 per cent of the weight of the cellulose. It may be a polytriglycol adipamide of molecular weight at least 5,000. In an example, there is used an interpolymer made by heating together the adipic acid salt of triglycoldiamine and a minor proportion of the adipic acid salt of hexamethylenediamine, and in another example there is used a polyamide made by condensing the adipic acid salt of triglycoldiamine with a minor proportion of the adipic acid salt of decamethylenediamine. Other diamines from which the polymers may be obtained are bis-(amino-propoxy)-hexane, tetraglycol diamine, and p-bis-(b -aminoethoxy)-benzene. Instead of the diamines and dicarboxylic acids, there may be used as reactants for the production of the polymer, any amide-forming derivative of these compounds, e.g. esters, anhydrides, amides, or halides of dicarboxylic acids, or, in presence of water, nitriles, cyano-carboxylic acids, cyanoamides, or cyclic imides of dicarboxylic acids, or carbamate, N-formyl, or N : N1-diformyl derivatives of the diamines. In examples, regenerated cellulose yarns, from viscose containing the polyamide addition, are dyed with the wool dyes of Colour Index Nos. 289, 430, 1088. Specifications 461,237 and 543,426 are referred to.
