Abstract

561,776. Electrically-operated brakes. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 25, 1942, No. 16721. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1941. [Class 103 (i)] In a spring - applied electro magnetically released disc brake, the magnet with a non- rotatable friction disc and the application spring are removable as a unit. Hand release of the brake and adjustment of the spring pressure is effected by a single lever. Adjusting means for the non- rotatable friction disc relatively to the armature to compensate for wear are provided. As shown, the disc 11 is slidably connected by pins 17 to a hub 4 keyed to the shaft 5 of an electric motor and is arranged to be gripped between a mounting plate 1 bolted to the motor housing 2 and a non-rotatable disc 9 by the pressure of a spring 10 that bears on the armature 8 of a magnet comprising a coil 7 and field members 6, 21. The magnet is provided with a shrunk-on annular member 18 of non-magnetic material by which it is mounted on the plate 1, by screws 19. The disc 9 and armature 8 are slidable on pins 23 fixed in the member 21 and the armature bears on the disc through a nut 26 which can be turned to adjust the disc 9 to compensate for wear of the friction linings 12. The disc 9 is returned when the magnet is de-energized, by a spring 49 which, at one end bears on the end 51 of the pin 48 and at the other end is fixed to the end 33 of a stem 31. This end of the stem is squared so that the nut can be turned with the stem by a tool applied to the outer end 37. A hand lever 32 slidable against the action of a spring 43 on a pin 41 screwed into a cylindrical projection 28 on the magnet is slotted to receive the squared part 36 of the stem 31 and has a pair of pins 39 one above and one below the stem, which engage a slot 40 in the nut 30 upon which the spring 10 bears. The lever may thus be fulcrumed at its upper end on the projection 28 to the broken line position to effect manual release of the brake by engaging a collar 38 on the stem 31 or by removing the screw 41 and sliding the lever downwards so that a circular part of the slot therein surrounds the stem, the lever may be turned about the stem to adjust the nut 30 and thus the compression of the spring 10. After this adjustment has been made, the pin 41 can be inserted in another hole in the projection 28, to secure the lever in the new position. Upon removal of the screws 19 the magnet with its armature 8, the disc 9 and the spring 10 may be dismounted from the plate 1. A housing 53 for the electrical connections of the magnet is provided.
