Abstract

561,144. Titanium dioxide; pigments. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1942, No. 11822. Convention date, Jan. 7, 1942, [Classes 1 (iii) and 95] A process for producing composite titanium dioxide pigments containing titanium dioxide in rutile form, comprises the steps of suspending particles of a non-fluxing extender pigment (e.g. calcium sulphate or barium sulphate or a mixture of the two) substantially free from sinter-promoting and fluxing impurities in a sulphuric acid solution of titanium, hydrolysing the solution in order to precipitate hydrous titanium oxide upon the extender pigment, mixing with the precipitate a small amount, e.g. 0.1 -5 per cent, of a converting agent comprising an inorganic compound selected from the group consisting of compounds having spinel, ilmenite, corundum, sodium chloride and phenacite crystalline characteristics, which does not decompose and is non-liquefiable and non-volatile at the temperature of the subsequent calcination, and calcining the mixture, e.g. at 775‹ C.-1100‹ C., until the titanium dioxide content is rutile. The composite pigments so obtained may, when a water-soluble extender has been used, be then washed free of the extender, leaving a substantially pure titanium dioxide pigment in rutile form. Other specified extenders are magnesium silicate and lithopone. Specified converting agents: are zinc stannate, zinc titanate, magnesium metatitanate, lithium titanate and zinc silicate, and, where the converting agent is a titanate, the basic metal oxide may be used directly and the converting'titanate formed in situ. Examples are given. Specification 517,742 is referred to.
