Abstract

560,955. Balancing reciprocating engines. DOXFORD & SONS, Ltd., W., and PURDIE, W. H. Sept. 22, 1942, No. 13343. [Class 7 (ii)] An oil engine of the vertical opposed-piston single crank-shaft type of the kind having a scavenge pump 20, Fig. 2, driven from the crank-shaft and situated in the middle of a row of cylinders, has the weights of all the lower (or upper) pistons modified, half being increased and half decreased, all by the same amount and the position of the scavenging crank 22 is arranged so that unbalanced primary forces for the complete engine remain at zero while the unbalanced secondary vertical forces are reduced to a small valve. In a four-cylinder engine, Fig. 2, each cylinder has two pistons coupled to a single crank-shaft 19 and the scavenge pump 20 is arranged between cylinders 2 and 3. The reciprocating weight of the pump is balanced by reducing the weight of lower pistons 26, 27 (cylinders 3 and 4) conveniently by fitting thinner piston skirts and increasing the weight of the other lower pistons 24, 25 by' the same amount by adding weights 28, 29. The phase of the pump crank relative to the cylinder cranks is shown in Fig. 3 and the added or subtracted weight is equal to #2 / 4 = 353, of the reciprocating weight of the scavenge piston assembly. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the lower pistons are secured to cranks arranged at 60 degrees. The scavenge pump crank coincides with that of cylinder No. 5 and in order to balance the scavenge pump assembly when the pump has the same stroke as the lower pistons, the weights of the lower pistons in cylinders 1, 5 and 3 are reduced by a quarter of the reciprocating weight of the scavenge pump assembly 31 and the pistons of cylinders 2, 4, 6 have their weights increased by the same amount. If the pump has a different stroke from the lower pistons, the added and subtracted weights are modified aceordingly. In other examples, the modification of the weights may be applied to the upper set of pistons or to both sets of pistons.
