[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXTX] A pressure measuring contrivance for determining water levels comprises a back pressure vessel connected to a pressure gauge, a diaphragm arranged in the vessel and acted upon on one side by the pressure to be measured and on the other side by the back pressure and two independent valves located in the vessel to control automatically the back pressure in accordance with the alterations in pressure. The liquid, the depth of which is to be measured, passes through openings 19 into the casing and acts on the outer surface of the diaphragm 15. The threaded bolt 33, secured to the surface 31 and passing through nuts 34, 35, rises and lifts the right arm of lever 27 depressing spring-ballvalve 23 to admit compressed air from a pipe 6 to chamber 13 and hence to the interior of the diaphragm until balance is' restored when the valve 23 closes. The chamber 13 communicates with a pressure gauge by means of the pipe 3 and this gauge registers the depth of liquid. When the liquid level sinks, the valve 24 is opened and pressure fluid from chamber 13 is exhausted to the atmosphere via pipe 5 until balance is restored. The nuts 34, 35 may be adjusted to engage the perforated plate 37 at high and low limits to prevent damage due to sudden fluctuations.
