Abstract

560,236. Inductances. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd., and CLARK, R. G. Sept. 23, 1942, No. 13404. [Class 38 (ii)] In a variable inductance comprising two series-connected coils L1, L2 slidable one within the other, the minimum value of inductance is decreased by an auxiliary coil so arranged as to be closely coupled with one of the main coils only when the latter have been moved to the position in which their mutual inductance is a minimum. An auxiliary coil which may be in the form of a short-circuited turn (e.g. a copper cylinder) S1 or S2, Fig. 1, may be associated with each of the main coils L1, L2. Alternatively, the auxiliary coil may be a winding L3, Fig. 5, connected in series or parallel with one of the main coils and magnetically opposed thereto, 'the movable element L1 of the main coils becoming closely coupled with the auxiliary coil when it is moved away from the other element to reduce the inductance.
