Abstract
560,057. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 17, 1942, No. 13146. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] A cathode for an electric discharge tube or lamp consists of an open work grid surrounding a space and having emissive material deposited on the inner side only of the electrode and the cathode is heated by passing current therethrough until the emissive temperature is reached and the resistance of the electrode is chosen such that the voltage required for this is sufficient to ionise the atmosphere in the tube. The electrode 21 may be a simple helical coil or a compound helical coil as shown. A plate 25 may be attached to one arm of the electrode to act as a shield to collect sputtered activated material. In order to apply the emissive material the coil is compressed axially until its convolutions go solid and a mixture of emissive material and liquid is applied to the interior of the coil. When the liquid has evaporated away leaving the material on the coil the convolutions are then permitted to spring apart.
