Abstract

559,991. Dyeing cellulose acetate materials. CLARK, D. M. (Atlantic Rayon Corporation). May 22, 1941, No. 6593. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Materials, e.g. yarns, fabrics, films, sheets, granules or coatings made of cellulose acetate are dyed by immersion in an aqueous solution of an acid dye, such solution containing an organic solvent for the cellulose acetate, the concentration of the solvent being between, on the one hand, the threshold value (at which for the particular duration and temperature of the dyeing operation the solution exhibits a greater wetting and penetrating capacity than that of water) and, on the other hand, either the critical value at which delustring begins or that at which swelling of the cellulose acetate begins under the particular duration and temperature of the dyeing operation, and the pH value of the solution being below 1.4. Specified solvents are formic, acetic and lactic acids, ethylene chlorohydrin and acetone. The necessary depression of the pH value may be effected by the addition of an inorganic acid, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric or phosphoric acid. Specified acid dyes are Wool fast blue BLA, Azorubinol GP, Alizarine cyanine green GHA, Fast silk yellow G and Milling red SWG. Examples of the dyeing process are given.
