Abstract

559,328. Adding inert gas to charge. BLANC, W. A., and PAICHE, J. P. L. March 31, 1942, Nos. 4298 and 4299. Convention dates, Oct. 6, 1941, and Dec. 29, 1941. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 25, 1942.] [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] An apparatus for adding exhaust gas or other inert gas to the mixture supplied to an engine comprises a supply pipe 101 for the inert gas terminating in a mixing device 114 downstream of the carburetter and fitted with a throttle 121 operated in dependence on the mixture throttle 117 and with an adjustable plunger 108 for varying the cross-section of the pipe. As shown in Fig. 1, the pipe 101 is L- shaped and provided with cooling fins. It is connected to the engine exhaust pipe 128 by a pipe 127, an expansion vessel 126 with baffle plates, and a flexible or other pipe 130. The gases are admitted to the induction pipe 116 through downwardly directed openings 115 in an interchangeable venturi 114. The piston 108 has a screwed stem 109 adjustable by means of a screwdriver and retained by a locknut 111. The throttle 121 is connected by levers 123, 120 and an adjustable link 122 to the mixture throttle 117, or may be actuated by engine suction. A hand-actuated throttle 124 enables the exhaust gas to be cut off when the engine is run on a mixed fuel such as producer gas and petrol. In a modification, the main supply of exhaust gas is taken from the exhaust pipe beyond the silencer, and a smaller supply from a point near the engine to an expansion chamber interposed in the pipe 120. In a further form, Fig. 3, the bore of the venturi 222 is widened at 226, above the inlets 224 for exhaust gas, to facilitate drawing in the exhaust gas by suction. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, includes also a construction not provided with the piston 108, and states that the inert gas may be supplied to the air intake of a carburetter. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
