Abstract

558,443. Drum brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 2, 1942, No. 9174. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1941. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake of the kind comprising a pair of shoes each arranged to anchor at one end or the other according to the direction of rotation of the brake drum, the shoes are applied by a pair of servo shoes each arranged between one pair of adjacent ends of the main shoes and applied respectively by the piston and cylinder of single hydraulic cylinder. The main shoes 14a are arranged to anchor against projections 13 on the back plate 12 each projection having a projection for a release spring 15. Lateral movement of the springs is prevented by engaging the ends 16 thereof with the inner sides of the shoes. One servo shoe 20 is secured to the cylinder proper 18 of a hydraulic cylinder and the other servo shoe 24 is secured to a yoke 22 which embraces the wheel axle and which is bolted at 21 to the piston 19. The servo shoes are normally disengaged from the drum by springs 35. When by putting the liquid in the cylinder 18 under pressure the servo shoes are applied, these are carried round by the drum and by admitting each on one end of a main shoe applies that shoe to the drum, the two main shoes abutting respectively on diametrically opposite anchors 13.
