Abstract
557,961. Valves. STAFFORD, R. W., and DUTTON, R. H. Dec. 9, 1942, No. 9103/43. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XIII, X and XXXVII] The exhaust pipe 2 of the engine of a motor vehicle is enlarged to enclose a pipe coil 4, the front end of which is connected to an air impeller 6 and to a valve port 10a, the rear end being connected to a pipe 9 discharging to the air and to a valve port 10b. The valve casing 10 leads to an air distributer 11 in the vehicle. A valve member 12 is provided with channels 12a, 12b extending transversely through it and so spaced that incoming cold air may pass wholly to the distributer 11 without heating, or in part direct and in part through the heater 4 to the distributer, or wholly through the heater. The valve 12 is actuated by a lever 14 through links 16, 17, 18 and the lever carries also a shoe moving over a cam surface whereby in its extreme positions a cable 21 is actuated to open the valve 8 and allow air to pass through the heater direct to the atmosphere, to prevent overheating.
