557,932. Acid amide derivatives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). Sept. 15, 1941, No. 11772. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] N-methylolamide derivatives of aliphatic polycarboxylic acid amides are etherified by treating with alcohols having up to five carbon atoms in the molecule at 0-100‹ C. in the presence of an acid catalyst having a hydrogen ionisation constant of at least 1 x 10<SP>-2</SP>. The alcohols may be substituted but the carbinol carbon atom must have at least one hydrogen attached thereto. The following alcohols are specified : methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, #-ethoxyethanol, 3-thiopentanol, cyclobutanol, 3-oxacyclobutanol, 3-ketobutanol-1, trimethylenechlorhydrin and 3- methylbutanol-1. In examples, methanol ethers are formed of the dimethylol derivatives of adipamide, oxamide, fumaramide, succinamide and sebacamide. The methylol derivatives of the amides of the following acids are also mentioned : tricarballylic acid, malonic acid, glutaric acid, pimelic acid, suberic acid, azealic acid, #-methyladipic acid, 4-ketopimelic acid, muconic acid, acetylenedicarbonic acid, chlorsuccinic acid, diglycollic acid, thiodiglycollic acid, dithiodiglycollic acid, trimethylaminetricarbonic acid, tetraethylsuccinic acid and brassic acid. Besides hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic, trichloracetic, oxalic, pyrophosphoric, sulphamic and phosphoric acid and sodium bisulphate may be used as the acid catalyst. The ethers produced resinify in association with compounds having a plurality of alcohol or thiol groups and with compounds containing at least one primary or at least two secondary amino groups. The use of polyvinylalcohol, 1: 12-octadecanediol, decamethylenedithiol, wood flour, cork, aniline and N:N- dimethylhexamethylenediamine is mentioned. The ethers promote flexibility of alkyd and ureaformaldehyde resins. A film comprising N:N<SP>1</SP>- bis(methoxymethyl)adipamide, castor oil modified alkyd resin and a urea formaldehyde resin and a coating composition comprising drying oil modified alkyd resin and N:N<SP>1</SP>-bis (methoxymethyl) adipamide are specified. The products improve the crease resistance of fabrics composed of linear polyamide filaments and reduce the solubility of pellicles, after resinification, formed from solutions of cellulose acetate containing the ethers.
