Abstract
557,350. Speed governors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., PAULIN, G. H., HORNER, F. H., and BERMAN, L. Feb. 11, 1942, No. 1786. [Class 135] A speed governor, particularly adapted for controlling the fuel supply to a fuel injection type internal combustion engine driving an electric generator supplying an electric traction motor in which the engine regulator is actuated by a servomotor controlled by a centrifugal governor has the governor loading spring adjusted manually and by the movement of the servomotor. In the form shown in the Figure a lever 14 coupled to the engine fuel pump is actuated by a piston 11 under the control of an auxiliary piston valve 5 working in a rotating ported tubular member 1. A disc 2 formed on the member 5 carries weighted arms 3 bearing on a disc 4 secured to the piston valve. The governor loading spring 7 is arranged between an abutment bearing through a ball-bearing 6 on the disc 2 and a movable abutment 8 slidably guided in the casing. The abutment 8 is pivoted to the mid-point of a lever, one end of which is coupled by a link 13 with the piston 11 while the other end bears on a movable fulcrum 15. This fulcrum comprises a pair of rollers carried by a bell-crank lever 16 connected by a link to an arm 18 on a shaft 18a connected to a driver's handle or to a power device under the driver's control. A further arm on the shaft 18a works between a pair of adjustable stops to limit the movement of the shaft 18a. As the shaft 18a is rotated the fulcrum moves to adjust the initial tension of the spring and also to vary the leverage of the lever 9. In a modification the lever 16 is mounted on a slidably mounted pivot adjustable in a direction at right angles to the spring axis.
