Abstract

556,808. Quenching steel. AFRICAN SISAL & PRODUCE CO., Ltd., and BROWNE, R. J. March 16, 1942, No. 3434. [Class 72] [Also in Group V] Pectin or pectic substances are extracted from the flesh of plants of the Agave family, including Agave Sisalana by washing the flesh with water, preferably below 60‹C. to remove water soluble substances; treating the hesh with inorganic or organic acids preferably those having calcium salts of low solubility, and treating the whole mass of the residual flesh after filtration, with an alkali such as sodium or potassium carbonate or ammonium hydroxide. Pectic substances are precipitated from the filtered extract by addition of alcohol, acetone, chloride, sodium hypochlorite &c. or by addition of electrolytic acids, or metal hydrosols such as aluminium hydroxide. The acid extract, if separated before the alkali treatment may be treated with alcohol to precipitate pectin. If extraction is effected by oxalic acid in presence of ammonium oxalate, a product suitable for use in the quenching of steel is obtained. Specification 538,271 is referred to.
