Abstract
556,085. Rolling; drawing. SIMONS, A. March 16, 1942, No. 3441. [Class 83 (iv)] The thickness of an elongated workpiece is reduced by drawing it between a pair of relatively adjustable, parallel, cylindrical rods, rolls, or dies which are supported throughout their operative length and oppositely reciprocated axially to reduce friction of the work. The rods &c. may also be rotated in the feed direction but at a surface speed less than that of the drawn product. The rods 52, 53 may be coupled to stub shafts 52a, 53a which are rotated through gears 42, 43 from a driven shaft 38 and are moved axially by linkages 59, 58, and 60 and a swash plate 46 which is also rotated by the shaft 38. The rods 52, 53 are carried in openside tubular bearings 54, 55, Fig. 4, secured in blocks 56, 57, the latter being fixed but the former vertically adjustable by means of screws 75, Fig. 1, worm gearing 72, and a hand-wheel 67. The work strip 87 is drawn between the rods 52, 53 by one of the drums 33, 34, Fig. 2, driven through gearing 22, 23 by a reversing motor 16, the strip coming from the other drum and passing through wipers 102, and 81 and over guide rollers 76. Lubricant is supplied by a pump 97, Fig. 1, to the space 89, Fig. 4, and flows by passages 82, 83 back to a sump 94. In a modification the rods are rotated and reciprocated by flanges rollers 106, 106, Fig. 10, which are themselves actuated by the mechanism previously described.
