Abstract
555,933. Drawing wire. ARNOLD, J. C. (Vaughn Machinery Co.). Jan. 13, 1943, No. 605. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 13, 1943.] [Class 83 (iv)] Continuous wire drawing machines have means for regulating both the back tension and the speed of the following drum. The wire passes from one drum to the next round a pulley 11 carried on arm 12 biased by a sector and pinion 16 on the shaft of a torque motor. Also gearing with the sector is a pinion 19 controlling rheostats 18, 18a. Manually operated rheostats 17c are in series with the fields 17b of the tensioning motors 17 and the field of the tensioning motor immediately preceding the last drum 3 is also provided with a manually operated rheostat 17d associated with a manually operated rheostat 7c in the field 7b of the motor 7 for this drum. The manually operated rheostats are set to give drives as determined by calculation for theoretically perfect conditions. Each armature 17a of the tensioning motors is in series with the armature of the drive motor for the next succeeding drum so that as the torque of the motor 7 or 6 increases a corresponding increase takes place in the back tension of the wire for the dies 10 or 9 respectively. Movement of the tension arms 12 by means of the rheostats 18 controls the speed of the immediately preceding drum motors and in the case of the intermediate motor (or motors if more than three are employed) the rheostat 18a is also operated to cause the torque of the following tension rheostat motor to be correspondingly varied. The tension arm following the first drum 1 controls only a single rheostat for the field of its motor 5. In a modification all the armatures are in parallel across the mains but the tension motors have, in addition to their rheostat regulated shunt fields, additional field coils in series with the armatures of the next succeeding drum motors.
