555,661. Internally-expanding brakes. PRATT, J. H., and GIRLING, A. H. G. May 14, 1942, No. 6559. [Class 103 (i)] An adjusting device for internally-expanding brakes comprises a spindle 7 which is turned by its hexagonal projecting end, so that the engagement of the corners of its hexagonal or like central part with the flat inner faces of sleeve members 9 and 10 causes a displacement of the members and through struts 13 of the shoes. Further turning of the spindle 7 causes through rotation of pinion 8b having teeth 8a engaging teeth on the ends of sleeves 9 and 10 a rotation of such sleeves which by screw threads 10 also cause an outward movement of plugs 11 and 12 to spread the shoes by struts 13. Rotation of the spindle 7 is continued until the shoes engage the drum. The spindle 7 is then turned in the reverse direction to bring the sleeve members 9 and 10 back into engagement with flats on the central part of the spindle thus resetting the brake clearance which is fixed by the size or depth of such flats.
