555,619. Simultaneous telephony and telegraphy. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., CHATTERJEA, P. K., and HOUGHTON, L. W. Feb. 27, 1942, No. 2644. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A telegraph system employs short unidirectional pulses which are sent at one frequency for marks and at a different frequency for spaces, and a simultaneous communication (e.g. speech) is sent by time modulation of the pulses. A sine-wave generator 1 is connected to a pulse generator 2 so as to generate pulses at the crests of the sine-wave. A second pulse generator 3 generates pulses at the troughs of the wave. Thus when the key 13 is closed pulses of double the sine-wave frequency are present in the mixer 4, whilst when the key 13 is open the pulse frequency is the same as the sine-wave frequency. The pulses may be applied to a radio transmitter 11, 15. Reception is obtained by passing the pulses through a filter which transmits one frequency and attenuates the other. A simultaneous telephony or other channel is afforded by time-modulating at 14 the pulses generated at 2. In an alternative telegraph system, the key is arranged to change the frequency of the sine-wave generator which in this case is connected to a single pulsegenerator, Fig. 5 (not shown).
