Abstract
555,084. Hydrogenated rosin esters. HERCULES POWDER CO. June 26, 1941, No. 8050. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Groups VI and V] A chewing gum base is prepared by intimately mixing rubber or rubber-like material, a wax or wax-like substance and a polybasic acid, or acid anhydride, modified polyhydric alcohol ester of hydrogenated rosin. The resinous ester may be prepared by heating a mixture of hydrogenated rosin a polybasic acid or acid anhydride and a polyhydric alcohol to 270‹C.-300‹C. for three to six hours, preferably in an atmosphere of CO 2 or other inert gas, volatile components being preferably subsequently removed by vacuum distillation or sparging with superheated steam or an inert gas. Alternatively, the hydrogenated rosin may be reacted with the acid before addition of the alcohol. The hydrogenated rosin is preferably at least 50 per cent. saturated. Maleic acid is preferably employed, other suitable acids being phthalic, succinic, malic, tartaric, fumaric, citric, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, and itaconic. The polyhydric alcohol component is preferably one having 3-6 carbon atoms and 3-6 hydroxyl groups, each on a superate carbon atom, such as glycerol, pentaglycerol, isobutyl-glycerol, butantriol- 1, 2, 3, erythritol, pentaerythritol, diglycerol, a mono-anhydro derivative of a hexahydric alcohol, e.g. mannitan, sorbitan, dulcitan, iditan and talitan, or pentahydric alcohols, e.g. adonitol, arabitol, xylitol, or rhamnitol or a hexahydric alcohol, e.g. mammitol, sorbitol, dulcitol, iditol or talitol. Esters of polyhydric alcohol or more than six carbon atoms, e.g. perseitol, lactositol, volemitol and ennesheptitol, esters of di-anhydro inner ethers of hexahydric alcohols, e.g. mannide, sorbide, dulcide, idide and talide, and less preferably glycolesters, glucose, sucrose or polyhydroxy acids such as glyceric, gluconic, mucic and saccharic acids may also be used. The rubber or rubber-like materials and other ingredients, including resins, softening agents and waxes or wax-like materials, and the methods of mixing, may be as described in Specification 555,083, [Group VI]. Examples are given.
