Abstract
554,591. Aluminium compounds. ENGLISH CLAYS, LOVERING, POCHIN & CO., Ltd., DAVIES, R. J., DERING, H. O., and PARKER, T. W. Dec. 1, 1939, No. 31285. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] Alumina is obtained from clay &c. by steps comprising sintering clay with ammonium sulphate to produce ammonium alum, extracting with hot ammonium sulphate, separating undissolved solids, crystallizing ammonia alum from the solution, filtering the crystals and passing through them a solution of ammonium sulphate containing ammonia to produce aluminium hydrate and ammonium sulphate the ammonium sulphate solution being derived from the initial mixture of clay and ammonium sulphate, the final solution being concentrated to give ammonium sulphate which is recycled with a fresh charge of clay. The solution from the sintered charge is treated with a reducing agent to reduce any ferric iron to the ferrous state.
