Abstract

554,466. Honing-machines. MITCHELL, R. J., and MARBAIX, Ltd., G. E. Sept. 29, 1941, No. 12607. [Class 60] In the honing of tapered bores the work is revolved with its bore in line contact with the rotating hone the hone or the work or both being operated to provide relative longitudinal movement between the bore and the hone. In an arrangement for a cylindrical hone the hone 3 is reciprocated and rotated while the work 6 is mounted in a work holder 7 which is rotated by a pinion 15 engaging teeth 16 and driven by a motor 18. The work holder 7 is carried by a transversely adjustable frame 11 slidable on guides 12 actuated by a screw device 13, 14 and has a base part 8 angularly adjustable by a hand wheel 22 operating through a worm 20 engaging a worm wheel segment 19 and carried on a longitudinally adjustable base 9 slidable on guides 10. After adjustment an extension 23 on the part 8 may be clamped by a locking member 26. To maintain line contact the axis of the workholder is off set relative to the axis of the hone by an angle equal to half the included angle of taper. The devices 14, 22 are provided with the usual fine adjustments. When using a tapered hone 3a the work is reciprocated on an intermediate member 28 on guides 30 on a mounting 29 which is adjustable relative to the table of the machine. The member 28 is reciprocated by a connecting rod 31 secured in one of a series of holes 35 provided at varying radii in a worm wheel 32 driven from a motor 34.
