[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A hydraulic engine of the kind described in the parent Specification for operating jigging conveyers in mines or quarries in which a stepped piston b works in a cylinder a and is operated by liquid from a pressure vessel c which is connected to the cylinder a by means of a valve f operated by a pilot valve g under control of a striking-gear h in accordance with the movements of the conveyer is modified by the provision of an independent pressure vessel i for supplying liquid under pressure to act upon the piston annulus to effect the return stroke of the piston 111. During this return stroke the exhaust is connected to a vessel d from which it is drawn by a pump e and delivered to the pressure vessel c. The pump e may be a variable delivery pump, or a fixed delivery pump with an adjustable suction valve, so as to enable the stroke of the conveyer to be shortened on an incline. The relative amounts of liquid and gas and the pressure of gas in the vessel i is variable, and the relative quantities of liquid and gas in the vessel c is also variable. The passage of liquid from the pilot valve g is controllable by screws.
