Abstract

553,828. Phase or frequency modulation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 30, 1941, No. 6970. Convention date, June 1, 1940. [Class 40 (v)] A circuit for phase or frequency modulation comprises a sine wave oscillation generator 1 stabilized by a crystal or other means, a multivibrator 3 converting the sine wave to saw-tooth form which is applied to a class B amplifier 9 together with modulating voltages from source 17 to provide pulses of varying duration which are applied to a resonant circuit 11 followed, if desired, by a frequency multiplying and amplitude limiting circuit 13. In the absence of modulating voltage, only the tips of the saw-toothed wave are applied to amplifier 9 resulting in a sinve wave EO, Fig. 2, in the output of the resonant circuit, but modulating voltages V1- V3 bring the saw-toothed wave into operation at different points on the slope resulting in output waves E1-E3. The circuit shown produces phase modulation, but if frequency modulation is required the modulating wave is modified in a resistance-capacity circuit as described in Specification 548,370.
