Abstract

552,909. Fireproofing. JORDAN, L. A., and O'NEILL, L. A. Oct. 27, 1941, No. 13807. [Class 95] [Also in Group VIII] Fibres and fabrics, e.g. hessian, calico and sisal net, are rendered fire-proof by immersion in an aqueous iron acetate solution, drying to precipitate a basic iron acetate, and thereafter treating with a non-volatile chlorinated organic compound such as chlorinated rubber, chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated naphthalene, chlorinated diphenyl and polyvinyl chloride in solution or emulsion form, to eliminate after smouldering. The product may be coloured by incorporating a pigment or paint with the chlorinated compound, e.g. by using a mixture of oil-bound water paint and chlorinated paraffin wax emulsion or a composition comprising chlorinated rubber, chlorinated paraffin wax, pigment and xylol. The iron acetate solution may be " iron liquor," or the supernatant liquor resulting from the precipitation of lead or calcium acetates with ferrous sulphate.
