[Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group XII] A filter for air or gases comprises a series of cylindrical brushes 19, Fig. 2, disposed round an axis 22; the air passes round and through the filter into a stationary filter cylinder 33 which may have rings of activated carbon, wire mesh, or metal baffle plates and through a final filter 36 to the outlet. The air is delivered to an annular space round the filter 19 by a fan 12, and the bottom of this space may contain water stirred by paddles acted on by the air flow and supporting holes 32 which increase the active surface and also supporting a float 23 supporting the filter drum either directly or through a thrust bearing. The drum may be rotated by the air flow acting on bent baffles separating the brushes and helical arms supporting the drum frame from its spindle 22. This spindle may be hollow and perforated to spray water, supplied under pressure, on to the brushes. A damper may be provided at the inlet to the space round the filter to vary the level of water at which an overload cut-out for the motor driving the fan operates. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the brushes 19 are mounted horizontally, the air passing first through the annular space round an imperforate cylindrical fixed partition 46 supporting helical vanes 45, then through the filter and finally inwards through a second, fixed, filter 33 to the outlet. A subsidiary rotatable brush 29 is provided in each form of apparatus ; this may be replaced by paddles. A spray nozzle 51 for the binding 19 and a water bath are provided. The brush cylinders 19 may be stationary, with interlocking bristles and helical supports giving a whirling motion to the air. The rotating cylinders 19 &c. may be driven from an external source.
