Abstract

551,610. Synthetic resins. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., GRIFFITH, C. F., and BRADLEY; P. R. April 12, 1941, Nos. 4880/41 and 3643/42. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Laminating material for making articles formed from laminae bonded and impregnated with a thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic is made by disposing between two permeable sheets, e.g. paper, fabric or open-weave fabric backed with paper, a layer of dry plastic particles in quantity sufficient to impregnate the sheets and then subjecting the sandwich to heat and pressure sufficient to adhere the sheets but insufficient to cause permeation of the sheets, and, in the case of thermo-setting plastics, to cure the plastic. Additional layers of plastic particles and sheets may be applied in succession and similarly treated. Openweave or net fabric, string or cord may be disposed in the plastic layer. A continuous web of sandwich material may be formed by applying to a paper web 1 from a hopper 7, by means of a toothed distributing blade 10 and roll 8, a stream 11 of dry powdered phenolformaldehyde resin or shellac, the thickness of the layer being regulated by a transversely oscillating V-shaped doctor blade 12 co-operating with a roller 3. The coated web 1 is then. passed together with a second web 5 through steam-heated pressure rolls 4. Alternatively the resin may be heated by a radiator 4a and pressed between cold rolls. A multiple sandwich may be formed by similarly applying resin to the sandwich and passing it, together with a third web between a pair of rolls of which the upper one only is heated. The sandwiches may also be made in an ordinary platen press. The laminated product may be made from both single and multiple sandwiches. Where the article has a sharp curvature single sandwiches, which allow the maximum slippage, are used.
