Abstract
551,276. Uniting plates by fusion. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES, Ltd., WILLEY & CO., Ltd., and JOHNSON, E. R. H. Aug. 8, 1941, No. 10097. [Class 83 (iv)] In a clamping device for use in the fusion butt-welding of the plates of tanks, gas holders and like containers of the kind in which clamping members on both sides of the plates are connected to each other by tie-members passing through the clearance between the edges of the plates, the clamping member at the side of the plates at which welding is effected is of channel section metal with the flanges towards the plates so as to bridge the edges thereof. The clamps consist of channel members 7, 8, having the flanges respectively projecting towards and away from the plates 5. The plates are secured between the members 7, 8 by bolts 11 passing therethrough, and through the clearance, the bolts being either flattened at 12 and slotted to receive cotters &c. 6 or the edges of the plates being recessed to provide enlarged clearances for round bolts. The base of the member 7 is provided with slots 9 through which welding is effected or the member 7 may be replaced by a number of bridge members similar to the parts 10 of the member 7. Asbestos or like sheets 16 may be placed between the work and the lower clamp. The clamps may be removed as welding advances or welding may first be effected at the spaces between the tiemembers and completed after removal thereof. The additional clearance may also be closed by welding. According to the Provisional Specification the clamping members may consist of slotted plates through which slotted tie-members pass, cotters being driven through the tie-members at each side of the plates, at one side only if the tie-members are shouldered.
