Abstract
550,899. Modulating systems. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Oct. 7, 1941, No. 12965. [Class 40 (v)] A modulating circuit for giving partial or complete suppression of one side-band whilst permitting undistorted reception with a linear detector, comprises a network KLC to which the carrier is applied, shunted by a modulating voltage source 3 in series with a peak rectifier 2 and a condenser-shunted resistance RC1. The network KLC has high impedance for frequencies between the carrier frequency wand the upper side band limit w+p, and low impedance at other frequencies, as indicated in Fig. 4. The rectifier 4 may be a diode, and the condenser C1 effectively short-circuits the resistance R at modulation frequencies. The modulated output at the terminals 4 has one side-band partially or completely suppressed, but is of such a character that a receiver with a linear detector will give an undistorted output. The network KLC may be modified so that its high-impedance range includes a portion of the lower side-band, thus giving double-sideband transmission for the lower modulating frequencies.
