Abstract
550,857. Cartons; packing. DEWEY & ALMY CHEMICAL CO., and CONTAINER CORPORATION OF AMERICA. July 25, 1941, Nos. 9496 and 9497. Convention dates, Aug. 3, 1940, and April 16, 1941. [Classes 18 and 94 (i)] A carton or like container comprises a bag, inserted therein and adapted to be closed by twisting the neck thereof, and means inserted in the mouth of the bag for preventing untwisting of the twisted neck ; the means preventing untwisting may be a member separate from the carton and engaging therewith to maintain the neck of the bag in the twisted condition or it may be a member integral with the carton. Goods, e.g. liquids and fluent materials which may be frozen, are inserted in the bag. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the means preventing untwisting of the neck of the bag 10 is an apertured member 11 and the neck of the bag is passed up through the aperture 13 and stretched over the rim of the member which is then disposed over the opening of the carton so that the bag 10 may be filled; when the bag is filled the member 11 is twisted to twist the neck of the bag and seal it and the member is then inserted in the carton so that it engages the walls thereof and maintains the neck of the bag in the twisted condition. The member 11 may have flaps which rest on the carton during the filling of the bag and which, with the neck of the bag stretched over them, are, after the neck has been twisted and sealed, turned down and inserted in the opening of the carton. Another member takes the form of a rectangular collar having depending flaps which may. be hinged thereto and which engage the turned-down closing flaps of the carton during filling; when the bag has been twisted and sealed the collar is pressed to alter it to a diamond shape and is then inserted in the carton so that its shorter sides engage the sides of the carton. In another arrangement, Figs. 14 and 15, the member 61 is of annular shape with hinged tabs 72 which rest on the flap 63 of the carton while the bag 60 is being filled and which are turned down after the bag has been filled and sealed and passed through the opening 67 in the flap 63 so that projecting parts 74 of the tabs engage the underside of the flap; the cover 66 of the carton has a locking tongue 66a which engages a slot 66b formed in the hinge line of the flap 63. The member may be an annulus hinged along a diameter and of a size to bridge the mouth of the carton while the bag is being filled ; after filling the reinforcing member, with the mouth of the bag stretched thereover is folded on the hinge and twisted to seal the bag and then placed flatwise on the bag and retained in the folded condition by the closing of the flaps of the carton. In a further arrangement, particularly for use when the bag is filled with liquid and frozen before insertion in the carton, the member is in the form of a circular collar, the lower edge of which has, preferably, a wavy conformation and which becomes embedded in the material of the bag when the collar is twisted to seal it and is so retained when the bag and contents are frozen; the collar frictionally engages the side walls of the carton when the bag is inserted therein. A rectangular imperforate member which fits within the upper end of the carton may be used ; the member is inserted in the mouth of the bag after the latter is filled, the filling funnel having a neck portion of the size of the member so that the latter can be passed therethrough into the bag. When it is desired to exclude air from contact with the liquid contents of the bag, the neck thereof is stretched and twisted at 'or slightly below the level of the liquid in the neck and any liquid above the twisted neck is discarded by inverting the bag before inserting it with the member in the carton. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 33 and 35 two opposite closing flaps of the carton are formed with pairs of notches 169, 170 and in filling the bag 10 it is inserted in the carton with its neck stretched over the upturned flaps 161, 164 and engaging the notches 169. After filling the bag is disengaged from the flaps, the neck twisted to seal the contents and engaged with the notches 169 of one of the flaps 161, 163 in the turned-down closed condition ; when the contents of the bag are to be used, the carton is opened, the bag is disengaged from the flaps 161 or 163, the flaps 161, 164 are turned down against the outside of the carton and the neck of the bag is stretched over the mouth of the carton and engaged with the notch 170. The notches in the flaps may be dispensed with and the flaps made of taper form and the neck of the bag may be closed after twisting by a key inserted therein and engaged with the walls of the carton before the closing flaps are turned down. When the bag is filled with fluent material, it is preferably shaken and air removed from the interior by a vacuum pipe.
