Abstract

550,486. Diketene. NEW, R. G. A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 2,1941. No. 8325. [Class 2 (iii)] Diketene is produced by preventing rise of temperature in a solution of ketene in acetone. The times necessary for the conversion at 0‹ and 20‹C., of a 5 per cent. solution of ketene are 24 and 8 hours respectively. Preferably the solutions used are of 4-6 per cent. strength. The reaction may be effected continuously by causing the solution to flow at the necessary rate through externally cooled tubes. An example is given. It is stated that diketene reacts with aniline to produce acetoacetanilide,
