Abstract
550,248. Spinning &c. frames. SACO-LOWELL SHOPS. April 28, 1941, No. 5478. Convention date, April 30, 1940. [Class 120 (ii)] A spinning or like frame is made of a number of sections located in longitudinal alignment and each section comprises a frame supporting its individual set of spinning devices and rotary shafts means being provided for securing the frames of adjacent sections together end to end and for flexibly connecting the shafts of adjacent sections; bearings are provided at the junction of the sections for supporting the ends of the shafts of adjoining sections and the frames are constructed and arranged so as to permit relative movement between adjoining frames to enable each section to accommodate itself to the floor on which it is supported while supporting the shafts in operative relationship to the spinning devices and substantially undisturbed by such relative movement. As shown each section consists of sheet metal flonged end frames 2, a rigidly connected together by a tubular member 4 and spindle rails 5. Screws 6 pass through the flanges 10 of the member 4 into a roller stand 12 disposed in the space between two abutting frames and screws 7 from the abutting frames into the flanges 10 while screws pass from the abutting frames into blocks welded into the ends of the spindle rails which are of box-like form and contain lubricant for the spindles 27 mounted therein; the space within the rails may be partly filled with wood blocks to reduce the amount of lubricant required. The legs c of adjoining sections are secured together by a bolt 22 which passes through a slot in one of the legs to provide for relative vertical adjustment thereof and both legs fit loosely in a foot 23, a screw, accessible through a hole 26 and threaded into a block welded to one of the legs, bearing on the bottom of the foot and allowing adjustment of the legs relatively to the floor. The end plates are also secured together by screws passing into bearing blocks 14 . 17 disposed between abutting plates and the distances between the parts 12, 17 where the end plates of adjoining sections are secured together are considerable so that if the floor settles the plates are free to spring transversely and accommodate themselves to any inequalities in the floor. Each ring rail 31 has its ends cut tranversely on offset lines connected by a longitudinal cut and the ends of adjoining rails interengage with a clearance and rest on a split block which is secured to a lifter rod 33, one end of a rail being secured to the block and the end of the other rail being free thereon so that jamming of the rail section is prevented in the event of misalignment of adjoining frame sections 5. The lifter rod is actuated by any convenient builder motion and is guided in the blocks 16, 17, an inclined bar 50 pivoted to the upper end of the rod passing between a pair of adjoining end plates and engaging a roller 52 in a slot in one arm of a bell-crank lever 51 pivoted on a bracket 53. The other arm of the lever lies under a roller 54 carried by a rod 46 carrying the thread boards 45 so that as the ring rails are reciprocated the boards 45 are reciprocated at a reduced rate and amplitude, each board 45 is supported at its ends by rods 48, the rods at adjoining ends of the boards being secured in a yoke 47 fixed to the rod 46. The rollers of each section are journaled in the stands 12 and the tin rollers in bearings 18 and the ends of the rollers of adjoining sections are connected together by Oldham joints which accommodate any misalignment of the sections due to movements of the floor. The creel is mounted on rods 56 which pass through to e blocks 14 and have their lower ends resting in sockets in the blocks 16. All the sections are driven by mechansim at the head of the machine, such mechanism being carried by a removable interchangeable unit, comprising split brackets 63 .. 67 secured to posts 61, 62 mounted in a horizontal bar 60 disposed in a support 105 bolted to the end plate of the adjoining section; the bar 60 also carries a bearing 68 supported 'on a pedestal 106 and carrying a shaft 20 disposed in alignment with the tin rollers of the sections and carrying fast and loose pulleys 70, 71, the shaft 20<SP>1</SP> driving all the gearing of the unit, and the rollers and spinning devices of the sections and the various gears and change wheels being mounted on the brackets 63 .. 67. The shaft 20<SP>1</SP> driving the tin rollers and the shafts driving the roller shafts are connected thereto by Oldham couplings so that the gearing of the unit may be easily disconnected from the frame sections.
