Abstract
550,175. Polishing magnesium &c. MAGNESIUM METAL CORPORATION, Ltd., and PEARSON, W. K. J. June 20, 1941, No. 7820. [Class 41] Magnesium and magnesium base alloys are polished by anodic treatment in a substantially non-aqueous electrolyte under the low or the high anode current, density polishing conditions indicated by sections b, e of the graph, which shows the relation between anode current density and applied cell voltage. The electrolyte may comprise a solution of perchloric acid in acetic anhydride, nitric acid in methyl or ethyl alcohol, hydrochloric or perchloric acid in methyl or ethyl alcohol, cyclo-hexanol, ethylene glycol or glycerine, or formic, acetic, oxalic or citric acid in any of the solvents mentioned, to which additions of sugars, glue or other nitrogen-containing compounds, and benzene derivatives may be made. The cathodes employed may be of graphite, lead, austenitic steel or aluminium.
