Abstract
550,086. Drilling-machines. THOMAS, E. P. E. Aug. 30, 1941, No. 11093. [Class 83 (iii)] An attachment described as for centering crankshafts in an engine lathe is stated to be applicable for use in any machine having two opposed spindles, (headstock or tailstock), or the equivalents thereof and to be applicable also for use in drilling, boring and turning. Brackets a are fixed to the bed, one at the headstock and one at the tailstock end. Slidable and rotatable in bearings bare hollow shafts f carrying chucks d in which the crank shaft &c. is held. Shafts I rotate and slide in the shafts f and are secured in the headstock and the tailstock spindles m respectively. Taper pins r connect the shafts f and l. In operation the pin i at the tailstock end is removed and the headstock spindle then drives the crank shaft whilst centering at the tailstock end is effected by the tailstock advancing the spindle I carrying the centering drill s. The lathe is stopped, the pin r at the tailstock end is replaced and that at the headstock end is removed. The lathe now drives the spindle l at the headstock end only and centering is effected at that end by advancing both spindles f and the crankshaft by means of the tailstock. Depth of centering is controlled by the spindles l contacting the ends of the crankshaft.
