[Class 78 (i)] A mechanical loader apparatus, suitable for use in the coal industry, comprises a jigging conveyer 11 movable by a haulage drum parallel to the coal face and a transfer platform over which the coal is shot from a lateral shoot at the rear end of the conveyer 11 on to an outer conveyer extending parallel to the coal face. The jigging conveyer consists of a trough 11 reciprocated longitudinally by an electric, pneumatic &c. driving device 12 located on a sloping base-plate 10. The trough 11 has a serrated front edge 15 and slopes downward to the rear at a smaller angle than the plate 10, the rear end of the trough overlying part of the device 12, to which it is connected at 12a. The trough is supported by wheels 18 riding on rails 19. Between the two conveyers is a row of pit-props, and the gap between the jigging conveyer shoot 16 and the outer conveyer is bridged by a row of plates manually removable from and insertable between any two pit props. Alternatively, the gap is bridged by a series of fingers 23 pivoted to a common rod 24, and adapted to be raised to a vertical position to pass by each pit prop as it is reached by the action of stationary ramps on the tail-end of side plates 26 on the fingers. The plates 26 form a continuous surface between the horizontal and the vertical fingers. In a further modification the fingers 23 are horizontally slidable inward to clear the props, and may be restored to position by springs or cams.
