Abstract
549,180. Tautening electric cables. DORMAN, LONG & CO., Ltd., and JUDGE, E. T. Aug. 13, 1941, No. 10299. [Class 78 (ii)] A device for taking up slack in conductors supplying current to moving machines, such as the trolley of an overhead travelling crane, comprises an inclined track 4 up and down which rides a wheeled carriage 8 on which is mounted a series of coaxial loose pulleys 12. The conductor 38 passes through a flared opening 35 in a contact box 34 mounted on the trolley 3, over a stationary pulley 28 down to the first of a series of loose pulleys 16 corresponding to the pulleys 12 but mounted on a fixed shaft 19. The conductor is reeved back and forth over the two sets of pulleys 12, 16 and its end is attached to a contact 39 from which leads a main 40. Close up to and in line with the pulley 28 is another stationary pulley 31, and as the trolley 3 travels from left to right the carriage 8 moves down the incline 4 till the trolley brings the opening 35 over the gap between the pulleys 28, 31, when the conductor 38 becomes transferred to the pulley 31 and the carriage 8 begins again to climb the slope 4. The pulleys may be grooved to accommodate two or more conductors, and a similar oppositely disposed incline 5 with parts duplicating those of incline 4 together with pulleys arranged co-axially with 28 and 31, may be provided for a second conductor or set of conductors 37. The pulley shaft on the carriages 8, 9 may be inclined to permit the conductor to pay on and off the stationary upper pulleys 16, 24 with minimum grind, and the slope of the inclines 4, 5 should be as low as effective gravitational pull of the carriages allows.
