Abstract
548,511. Theodolites and the like. COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, Ltd., TAYLOR, E. W., and HARRISON, J. W. Aug. 25, 1941, No. 10826. [Class 97 (ii)] In theodolites and the like the vertical and horizontal circle plates are provided with means for moving the plate in its own plane so as to adjust its centring without removal of the circle plate from its mount. Figs. 3 and 4 show a vertical circle 2 having a boss 11 adapted to fit into the machine end of the transit axis 1 with slight freedom. The boss 11 is provided with a number of saw cuts 12 to provide segmented springy walls to the boss which boss is also provided with screws 15 the points of which are adapted to bear on steel balls 17 arranged in recesses 16 closed by a plate 14 secured in place by screws 13. When adjusting the securing screws 3 are slackened and one or more of the screws 15 are tightened causing the ball or balls to spring out the weakened wall or walls of the boss and so move the circle plate in its own plane in the desired direction, it being understood that the screws 15 at the opposite end of the diameter from those being operated are slackened. The retaining screws 3 are then screwed home. Fig. 7 shows another method in which manipulation of capstan headed screws 22 perform the adjusting movement by bearing on the machined interior face of the transit axis. Fig. 14 shows a method applied to a horizontal circle plate 30. The alidade is rotatably mounted in a socket 27 carried by the fixed base and a sleeve 29 is rotatable around the socket 27. The circle plate 30 is secured to the sleeve 29 by screws 9 which when slackened permit limited movement of the circle plate 30 in its own plane. The required movement is obtained by the manipulation of one or more screws 32 carried by the circle plate the conical ends of which screws bear upon the side of conical recesses 33 in the sleeve 29 to exert a sideways pressure.
