Abstract

548,091. Steam traps. BAILEY, W. May 9, 1941, No. 6037. [Class 64 (ii)] A steam trap 1 is provided with a cover 2 having inlet and outlet openings 3, 4 in line. The inlet passage 5, 6 terminates below a strainer 15, above which is arranged an inverted bucket 10. An annular baffle 13 constrains steam and air to rise into the bucket. A valve 21 in the form of a metal stamping is mounted to slide on fixed vertical guide pins, and has a flange 22 which is engaged by a flange 12a on a guide tube 12 carried by the bucket to open the valve. If water only is delivered to the trap, the bucket remains in its lower position so that the discharge valve is open. If steam and air are delivered, water is displaced from 'the bucket, which rises and closes the valve. Air escapes through the opening 29 and steam condenses, allowing the bucket to fall, whereby air is discharged, together with water, until the entry of steam raises the bucket and closes the valve. An excessive inflow of steam is provided for by slots 30 in the guide tube, which permits escape to the exterior of the bucket. The passages 3, 4 may be connected and controlled by a hand operated valve which enables the trap to be cut out of the system.
