Abstract
547,922. Loud-speakers ; measuring sound intensity. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 2, 1941, No. 5719. Convention date, July 17, 1940. [Classes 13 and 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] In a method of absorbing sound waves, e.g. at the back of a loud-speaker diaphragm, or in apparatus for measuring the intensity of sound the sound waves are transformed from their natural velocity to a high-particle velocity and then absorbed. This may be done by a tapered horn having sound absorbing material in its throat portion, or the walls of the horn may be of sound-absorbent material. The portion 34, Fig. 3, of the horn near the diaphragm 30 may be cylindrical for a distance not exceeding a quarter wave length of the lowest frequency to be absorbed, followed by a portion having a taper exceeding the exponential curve, and a third portion having an exponential taper. The horn may vary in cross-section from point to point, Figs. 2, 2A, 2B, or be coiled to reduce its length, or may be divided into a number of tapered portions by axial partitions, Fig. 5 (not shown). For measuring sound intensity, a microphone or Rayleigh disc may be mounted in an outer tube leading into a tapered horn, Fig. 1 (not shown).
