[Class 45] [Also in Group XVII] A package-binding apparatus, more particularly for locating the tie on the inner rim of annular packages, comprises the usual gripping, tensioning, deforming, and cutting elements. The annular object 26 is laid on a platform 15 with the deforming and cutting members disposed in the central space, and is pressed against the deforming jaws 70, this action effecting also counterclockwise rotation of a lever 91 pivoted at 92. The binding strap 27 rises from a rotary reservoir located below the platform 15, and passes through a vertically slidable gripper 30 and a similar detent 50 to extend above the platform 15 through a slot 29. The loose pro- ' jecting end of the strap is seized by hand and passed round the package, the end being guided during its passage under the package by a shaped trough 105 fitted with spring-pressed balls at its further end, the strap passing beneath and between the balls to rise against through the slot 29. Its end is then again pulled and bent down over the inner rim of the package, or, if desired, around both outer rims as well, and while so held in position the loop around the package is tautened by reciprocation of a handle 17. This repeatedly raises and lowers the gripper 30, the preferably serrated jaw 40 of which slides over the strap on its upward travel and grips same on its downward stroke. The tightening of the strap enables it to snap free of the guide balls. The first down movement of the strap brings with it the detent 50 against the pull of a spring 57, and a pivoted catch 58 holds the detent 50 in its bottom position. The jaws 70 are forced toward each other on each side of the strap overlap by toggle links 73, 74 actuated through connecting rods 78, 80 by a foot-operated bell-crank 81, and after compression a knife 104 is advanced by the same means to cut the outer strap portion and free the package. The handle 17 is then lifted up till a notch 63 strikes a pin 62 on the catch 58 to raise same and free the detent 50, which then rises under the pull of spring 57 to bring the strap loose end into position for seizing and passing around the next package. The purpose of lever 91 is to give an initial small pressure by the jaws 70 to retain in place a deformable sheath around the joint. Specifications 289,951, [Class 45], and 354,831 are referred to.
