Abstract

547,138. Levels. ALLEN, D. Oct. 22, 1941, No. 13572. [Class 97 (ii)] A sleeve B, which may carry a flywheel C, is rotated freely on a spindle A, with sufficient clearance to provide an air film between them. the sleeve moving to one end of the spindle under gravity if the spindle in out of level. The spindle is pivoted at one end E to a support on a machined base D, and its other end is supported by a spring H and engaged by a micrometer screw G which is adjusted to bring the spindle to a true level and thus indicate the inclination of the base. The sleeve may be driven by toothed gearing K, L, the wheel K being movable about a pivot M out of gear with the wheel L to leave the sleeve free after attaining speed. The base may be grooved to seat on a shaft, and a dust cover I for the moving parts may be provided.
