Abstract
546,902. Actuating clutches; tappet mechanism. POTTER, W. W. Oct. 28, 1940, No. 15794. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] Consists in mechanism for transmitting, at will, intermittent movement to a member from a constantly rotating part, such mechanism being particularly applicable to the actuation of clutches in automatic machine tools. To a shaft 11 adapted to rotate in bearings at the ends of a casing 10 are keyed a number of discs 13 side-by-side. Each disc carries a lug or tooth 14 adapted, when required, to actuate one of a pair of arms 17 of a lever 16 connected by a rod 18 to.the sleeve 20, for example, of a clutch. Two adjacent discs constitute a unit for acting upon one lever and the arms 17 are arranged in different planes, corresponding to the planes of rotation of the teeth 14, each tooth acting upon only one arm and in one direction. The two teeth of a unit are spaced so far apart circumferentially that it is impossible for them to act simultaneously on their respective arms. Within the casing 10 is a liner 21 with slots at 22, 27, 29. The teeth 14 do not act directly upon the arms 17 but through the intermediary of balls 23 which can be released from a chamber 25 to be driven round by the radial face of the tooth 14 until it engages and displaces an arm 17 to move the rod 18 in one direction and bring the other arm 17 into a position'to be struck by the ball, when released, of an adjacent disc to reverse the lever and movement of the rod 18. Each ball is released by lifting its respective spring-loaded lever 37 to withdraw a slide 26 and, after striking the arm 37, the ball is guided at 28 back to the chamber 25. A second slide 260 is provided to hold the ball in case the lower slide is withdrawn. There is a lever for each ball and these levers may be actuated by dogs 380 on discs 38 carried by a power driven shaft 39. A flat spring 40 at the bottom of the chamber 25 prevents jamming of the balls.
