Abstract
546,895. Elastic yarns. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. July 30, 1941, No. 2725/42. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1940. Divided out of 542,313. [Class 120 (iii)] A balanced single cover elastic yarn, i.e. one in which the cover is wrapped around the core in a single operation, is made by advancing a pre-twisted rubber thread and a covering yarn under independently controlled tensions to a meeting point so as to bring the twisted rubber thread and covering yarn into side by side longitudinal relation and then twisting them together by a yarn-plying operation in a direction to remove part of the twist previously imparted to the rubber thread and place the covering yam about the rubber thread so that as the thread assumes a central position, the yarn will lie helically about it and balance the twist thereof and hold it under longitudinal tension. As shown the pretwisted rubber thread 39 is supplied from a spool 40 driven by a roller 41 and passes to a pair of rollers 42 driven at a higher surface speed than the spool 40 so as to stretch the thread to the desired extent. The cover yarn 43 is drawn from a cone 44 by the rollers 42 and is tensioned by a device 45, the thread and cover yarn passing together from the rollers, through a pigtail 46 disposed in axial alignment with a spinning spindle 47 upon which the covered elastic yarn is wound.
